NEW SPECIALIZED TRAINING AT THE SCHOOL FOR PROFESSIONAL AND CONTINUING STUDIES IN NBU!

 

 

COURSE DESCRIPTION AND AIMS

 

This is a two-day clinical course aimed for dental practitioners of all specialties who wish to become more proficient in all tissue Er:YAG lasers by gaining some advanced skills and competencies. The course provides evidence-based core knowledge in laser Er:YAG use in dentistry as well as refining your practical skills. You'll learn to use laser therapy to benefit your patients' experiences and outcomes. Emphasis is placed on integrating this course into the ongoing practice of dentistry for you and your patients.

 

Er:YAG lasers have a wide range of applications across various fields of dental medicine, including cariology, periodontology, oral surgery, implantology, endodontics, pediatric dentistry, and more.

The educational objective of the course is to provide participants with in-depth knowledge about the clinical indications for the Er:YAG LiteTouch laser device with a wavelength of 2940 nm, as well as information on its proper operation and safety protocols in accordance with the Curriculum Guidelines and Standards for Dental Laser Education. The course covers all aspects of laser-assisted treatment of both soft and hard oral tissues using the Er:YAG laser.

 

COURSE CONTENT

 

Module one (theory):

Theory covered:

  • Laser terminology
  • Laser safety and operating parameters
  • Integration of Er:YAG lasers into dental practice - clinical and marketing aspects. ROI.
  • Er:YAG laser LiteTouch™ overview
  • Hard tissue applications – endodontic applications (plus endodontic surgery), treatment of dentinal hypersensitivity, caries and non-caries lesions, laser-assisted debonding of all–ceramic restorations and ceramic brackets.
  • Soft tissue applications – oral surgery, non-surgical and surgical periodontal treatment, bone surgery and implantology, treatment of peri-mucositis and peri-implantitis, aesthetic dentistry (gum “bleaching”, correction of gummy smile, lip hydration), therapy of oral mucosal lesions, specific applications in pediatric dentistry. Treatment of snoring.

 

Module two (clinical demonstrations):

  • Life demonstrations of Er:YAG laser procedures on patients (performed by the trainer): treatment of caries, debonding of ceramic brackets or veneer, laser-assisted endodontic irrigation, non-surgical periodontal treatment, gingivectomy, biopsy and flap procedure.

 

Module three (hands-on session):

  • Er:YAG laser procedures on extracted teeth, soft tissue and bone (animal models) and typodonts (including debonding of ceramic brackets, disinfection of implant surface, laser-assisted endodontic irrigation etc.)

 

LEARNING OUTCOMES

 

By the end of the course, you should:

  • have improved your evidence-based core knowledge in Er:YAG laser use in dentistry and refined your practical skills.
  • have an understanding of laser physics, emission modes, and how this particular laser wavelength interacts with various target tissues in order to deliver the optimal outcome.
  • have an understating of the advantages of Er:YAG laser applications in dentistry in comparison to the conventional methods.
  • have an appreciation of the relative importance of evidence-based practice in laser dentistry.
  • have an understanding of the health and safety regulations in using Er:YAG laser in your daily practice.

 

STRUCTURE, TEACHING AND ASSESSMENT

 

  • The course consists of three face-to-face modules covered in two days.
  • Course content will be delivered through modular didactic and practical sessions.
  • You'll need to sit a multiple-choice examination at the end, made up of 30 questions. The pass mark will be 70%.

 

CERTIFICATION

 

You will receive certificate when you complete the three face-to-face modules.

 

QUALITY CONTROL

 

All teachers are experienced professionals. You will be asked to submit written feedback via a questionnaire at the end of the course, which is used to monitor the course's quality of teaching.

 

 

THE COURSE IS RUN AT THE NEW BULGARIAN UNIVERSITY IN COLLABORATION WITH THE BULGARIAN DENTAL LASER ASSOCIATION (MEMBER OF ISLD).

 

 

PRELIMINARY REQUIREMENTS

 

Participants should be professionals in dental medicine.

 

 

TutorProf. Georgi Tomov, D.M.D.Ph.D.

 

 

 

Prof. Georgi Tomov graduated with a Master’s degree in Dentistry in 2004. He holds specializations in Operative Dentistry and Endodontics (2008) and Periodontology and Oral Mucosal Diseases (2019). In 2009, he defended his doctoral dissertation and was awarded PhD degree. He was appointed Associate Professor in 2012 and promoted to Full Professor in 2022 at the Department of Periodontology and Oral Mucosal Diseases, Faculty of Dental Medicine, Plovdiv. He has served as Head of the same department (2020–2024), Vice Dean for Research at the Faculty of Dental Medicine – Plovdiv, Director of the Center for Continuing Education at the Medical University of Plovdiv, and Director of the Center for Laser Dental Medicine at the same institution. Since 2025, he has been a Full Professor at the Department of Healthcare and Social Work at New Bulgarian University.

 

Prof. Tomov’s scientific and clinical interests focus on endodontics, oral pathology, periodontology, and the application of lasers in dental medicine. He is the author of over 50 full-text scientific publications and has been extensively cited in Bulgarian and international journals. He has supervised seven successfully defended PhD theses and is the author of two monographs and co-author of five textbooks and teaching aids.

 

He has been a guest lecturer at several foreign universities, including Rey Juan Carlos University (Spain), Hadassah (Israel), Showa University (Japan), and the Eastman Dental Institute (United Kingdom), among others. He serves on the editorial boards of Lasers in Dental Science (Germany) and Health Technology (Taiwan). Since 2024, he has been Vice President of the International Society for Laser Dentistry (ISLD).

 

 

 

 

The course will take place on 19 and 20 of February 2026 (theoretical and clinical parts) in Sofia, Bulgaria. The classes will be organized at the NBU campus and a specialized dental clinic.  

 

The course duration is 8 academic hours and will take place for a group of 15 participants.

 

Language of instruction: English.
